More than 70 people have been killed and hundreds have been injured in Nice, France, after an unidentified driver drove a truck through a crowd of people celebrating Bastille Day.

The driver was reportedly shot and killed by police after driving through the crowd at up to 30 mph for more than a mile.

The driver may have also fired upon the crowd in the process and there may have also been a second occupant of the truck.

Within the truck, described as a large white lorry, police reportedly found weapons and grenades.

While the motivation for the attack is not yet clear, it appears to be deliberate.

UPDATE:

French president Francois Hollander has labelled the Bastille Day attack an act of terror.

Casualties have reached 80 dead with another 18 critically wounded.
